Brent Bersin is a managing director in the Disputes and Investigations practice. He brings over 20 years of experience providing financial and economic damages quantification, valuation, and expert witness services to clients in the context of intellectual property and commercial disputes.
Brent has significant intellectual property experience which includes market assessments, valuation, licensing, and the calculation of reasonable royalty, lost profits, unjust enrichment, and price erosion damages. He has also assisted attorneys, investors, management and other stakeholders in assessing the value of early stage technologies, latter-stage technologies, patents, trade secrets and intellectual property portfolios for various purposes, including taxable transfers, sales transactions, licensing, intercompany transfers and collateral for financing transactions.
Brent also possesses substantial experience providing economic analysis and expert testimony in complex commercial disputes, which have included issues of lost profits, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, unfair competition, fraud, alter ego, post-acquisition and purchase price disputes, business interruption, and valuation. Brent has been designated and testified as an expert at both trial and deposition in Federal Court, State Court, and Bankruptcy Court, as well as arbitration proceedings. Prior to joining Duff & Phelps, Brent was a managing director with Grant Thornton LLP, where he was the Houston Disputes and Litigation practice leader, and has previously held leadership positions at other consulting firms.
Brent is a frequent speaker and author on intellectual property and economic damages. He serves on the Technical Advisory Board for the AICPA Forensic and Valuation Services Quarterly Digest and the planning committee for the University of Texas Advanced Patent Law Institute. He is also an associate member of the American Bar Association (ABA), and a member of the Licensing Executive Society (LES), Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA), and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
Brent holds a BBA degree in accounting from the University of Houston. He is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Texas, a Certified Licensing Professional and is Certified in Financial Forensics.
