NEW YORK — Duff & Phelps, the global advisor that protects, restores and maximizes value for clients, today announced that it will host its sixth annual IP Value Summit on October 15, 2019 at The Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay, California. Now in its sixth year, the Summit will bring together corporate executives, attorneys, investors and other experts to discuss intellectual property (IP) best practices, case studies, challenges and opportunities. The program is structured around strategies for optimizing IP across three areas: valuation and M&A, tax and transfer pricing, and licensing and litigation.

This year’s IP Value Summit will focus on recent IP developments and their impacts, along with opportunities, risks and best practices for dealing with the ever-changing IP landscape. Discussions will center around blockchain and cryptocurrency; the fintech regulatory landscape; the components of standard essential patents (SEPs) and the impact of fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms; the effects of the latest Base Erosion and Profit Sharing (BEPS 2.0) proposal on the international tax landscape; and drivers for onshoring IP holding structures.

“Our IP Value Summit brings together professionals from nearly every business perspective – from high tech to biotech. This is especially true with Duff & Phelps and Kroll together," said Chris Bakewell, Global Head of Intellectual Property Advisory Services at Duff & Phelps. “In addition to new business trends affecting the value of IP assets, transparency and regulation, attendees will benefit from discussion on issues impacting the industry, including globalization, IP theft in Asia and U.S. case law around patent value.”

In addition to the three tracks, the program includes keynote speeches from the following:

  • Opening Keynote: Deanna Okun, Partner, Adduci Mastriani & Schaumberg and Former Commissioner, United States International Trade Commission

Ms. Okun has extensive experience as a top administrator, regulator, enforcer, legislative aide and lawyer. She is an international trade lawyer providing legal and strategic advice to steer companies through the intersection where innovation confronts barriers, such as intellectual property theft, unfair trade practices or regulatory hurdles. During her 12 years at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), she served two terms as Chairman. While serving as Commissioner, she ruled on hundreds of cases involving allegations of patent, trademark and copyright infringement as well as other types of unfair acts such as trade secrets. During her tenure at the ITC, Deanna was nominated to be Deputy United States Trade Representative. Prior to her appointment to the ITC, she served as counsel for international affairs to U.S. Senator Frank Murkowski, Chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and senior member of the Finance and Foreign Relations Committees and practiced international trade law with a large Washington D.C.-based law firm.

  • Closing Keynote: Roger Martin, former Chief IP Strategist and Senior Vice President, Qualcomm

Mr. Martin spent 25 years at Qualcomm where he determined the strategic direction of and managed one of the world’s leading IP portfolios, containing over 130,000 patents and applications in 150 countries worldwide. He created and led a cross-functional IP department that is recognized as the primary model organization for effective IP management in the technology industry. Mr. Martin led all aspects of IP management, including directing activities in IP preparation and prosecution, IP-related mergers and acquisitions, IP litigation and licensing negotiation, IP-related anti-competition defense, industry standards IP policy compliance, open source software strategy and compliance, IP budgeting and IP policy advocacy.
