ESG and Global Investor Returns Study

Kroll’s ESG and Global Investor Returns Study (“ESG Returns Study”) analyzes the relationship between a company’s total stock returns (dividends plus capital appreciation) and its MSCI environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings over the 2013−2021 period. For this analysis, we built investment portfolios comprising of companies rated under each of MSCI’s seven individual ESG rating categories (i.e., AAA, AA, A, BBB, BB, B and CCC, with AAA being the best and CCC being the worst) and aggregate ratings (i.e., Leaders, Average and Laggards) to investigate whether an investment strategy focused on companies with better ratings would result in a superior return performance. Our analysis found that companies with better ESG ratings generally outperformed those with lower ratings over the 2013−2021 period.

The ESG Returns Study is unique in its design as the most comprehensive quantitative examination of the relationship between companies’ ESG ratings and returns, which includes analyzing four geographic regions (World, North America, Western Europe, and Asia Pacific) and 12 countries/territories (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, India, Japan, South Korea, the UK and the U.S.).

In addition, within some of these geographies, we further scrutinize the results for 11 industries (as defined by the GICS® structure): energy, materials, industrials, consumer discretionary, consumer staples, health care, financials, information technology, communications services, utilities and real estate. The methodology used and key insights from the study can be found by downloading the report.

Below, you can explore our study results through our dynamic Kroll ESG Dashboard. Our dashboard illustrates the compounded annual return of your selected investment portfolio for individual and aggregate MSCI ESG Ratings. Returns were all translated into U.S. dollars to allow comparisons across geographies.
