Morning Keynote Speaker John Bass, Director at Duff & Phelps and Former Operational Executive for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)'s National Clandestine Service (NCS)

John Bass is a former operational executive for the Central Intelligence Agency’s National Clandestine Service — the undercover arm of the CIA and a new Director in Duff & Phelps’ Legal Management Consulting Practice. Acknowledged as a thought leader in risk management, insider threat and cybersecurity by the CIA, he has established himself as a major force in his field with over 27 years of experience in international affairs. Most recently he was the CIA’s senior representative to the FBI for counterterrorism (CT), managing the international and domestic CT relationship, charged with preventing another 9-11. He was also a CIA Chief of Base in an active warzone, where he was responsible for assessing and managing risk across physical, political/reputational, human capital and cyber assets. He also previously served as consul at the US Consulate in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

An alumnus of Mercer Benefits Consulting, John has lived in Ethiopia, Kenya, Turkey, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Central Asia. He speaks Farsi, Turkish, Italian and Portuguese and holds an MBA from Johns Hopkins. John is from Terre Haute, Indiana, and graduated from Bradley University with degrees in physics and mathematics.

Robbie is best known as the legendary litigator who successfully argued the landmark Supreme Court case, United States v. Windsor, on behalf of her client Edith Windsor. Described as a powerhouse corporate litigator with decades of experience in both commercial and civil rights litigation, Robbie has become an expert in cutting-edge areas of law. She recently founded Kaplan & Company and was previously a litigation partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, LLP.  Robbie is the author of the book Then Comes Marriage: United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA. Upon reading it, President Bill Clinton noted that "Roberta Kaplan emerged as a true American hero."
