As such, the approach to the annual impairment test performed on a public company’s balance sheet plays a central role. To address some of the issues and challenges associated with impairment testing in today’s financial climate, Duff & Phelps recently co-hosted a seminar (with Pirola Pennuto Zei & Associati) in Milan called “Are Market Values Fair? The use of market prices in impairment testing.”

The feature presentation of the seminar was an analysis of Italian public company data to understand “why and when do Italian companies impair their goodwill and other assets?” Our research included a comparison between book values and market values, and considerations of German and US listed companies’ behaviors.
